Humanitarian work
Since its role during the Crusades the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is founded on both a Military Order of Mercy as well as a Hospitaller one, caring for the sick and needy. Since the Order was founded on hospitaller grounds, initially that of looking after leprous knights and others in the Holy Land during the Crusades, it has spread its wings.
In recent years the
expansion of the Order and its humanitarian
activities have taken a new direction. Aid to the starving, the
handicapped, the sick and to the aged has been added to the Order's
pursuit of its traditional mission in the field of leprosy.
